The Yoga Studio
A serene environment enhances any yoga practice, and The Yoga Studio is truly serene. The spacious interior is enclosed in walls wearing soft, peaceful colors. White herons on a background of greens and lavenders grace a large mural in the yoga room. Stained glass windows atop tall clear ones, with scenes of a dove carrying an olive branch, the Star of David, and a cross, hint at the structure's unique past.

Built in 1938, the building was originally a Jewish Synagogue for Camden's small Jewish community. It was called "Temple Beth El Emeth," meaning "House of the True God." In the 1960's, the building was sold to a Methodist congregation, who worshipped there before building their own church, and then it housed a non-denominational Christian church in the 1970's. Converted into a home in 1980, it was enjoyed by two families until 2006, when Kenny and Linda Leseberg purchased it for their yoga studio.

Only a few changes have been made to the home. The carpet in the yoga room was replaced with a wood floor, and Linda's brother Terry, artist for several large murals in downtown Camden, painted the lovely mural. One unchanged element in the building is the windows. Sunlight still streams in through the beautiful stained glass, just as it did in 1938 when the building was Temple Beth El Emeth. Perhaps to the Jews who worshipped there in years long passed, the sunlight served to remind them of the Creator whom they worshipped. Now, to those who practice yoga here, the sunlight is still a reminder of the Creator. Pouring in through those antique windows, the light illuminates the studio-where one can take care of the body granted to him or her by the same One that made the sun.
